Friends of the White River is an advocate for the watershed, striving to preserve, protect and enhance one of the state’s greatest natural resources. The Friends’ goals are to educate and inform the central Indiana community about the value of the waterway, as well as to engage and support a wide variety of interests with projects to improve it. The Friends represent those who use the river for recreational purposes, those who live near its banks, and all citizens interested in the preservation of the river as a natural resource. Friends’ signature program is River School, an on-the-water learning experience for high school students. Other Friends activities, done alone or in collaboration with other groups and agencies, include annual river cleanups, increasing access to the River, sponsoring fishing events for kids, restocking fish populations, clearing invasive plants from riverbanks, and planting native species, as well as educational programs.
